Hij was lid van de kunstenaarsvereniging Pulchri Studio en de Gooise Schildersvereniging. Schulman woonde en werkte voornamelijk in Laren, waar hij veel inspiratie haalde uit het landschap en het dorpsleven. Zijn werk kenmerkt zich door sfeervolle lichtinval en een losse penseelstreek.
