Its fossils were discovered in the Judith River Formation, in Montana, United States, and formally described in 1986. This dinosaur belongs to the subfamily Centrosaurinae , a group of medium sized ceratopsians characterized by prominent nasal horns and ornate frills. Avaceratops was a
