Europe and VeniceThe story of Vincenzo Gemito (1852 1929) is that of a foundling, raised in the streets of Naples, who would become one of the greatest sculptors of his time, celebrated in his hometown and later in the rest of Italy and Europe. At the age of twenty five, settled in Paris, he caused a sensation at the Salon and then the following year at the Universal Exhibition of 1878. Alternately decried and adored by critics, he introduced realism into Italian
